A series based on Dragonriders of Pern is coming to The WB in fall of 2001, unless the threatened writers strike screws things up for everybody.

Show bigwig Ronald Moore was last seen on Roswell and most of the Star Treks.)

He said he'll try to be faithful to Anne McCaffrey's source material.

He'll try? That's nice. Not too faithful, I hope. That would be wrong.

The show will be based on the novel Dragonflight, and it will feature CGI dragons and special effects.

"We're going to be pushing the envelope on what we can do on TV," Moore told Variety, "and deliver creatures that haven't been seen before and in a way that hasn't been seen before."

Moore said that translating a novel into a television series inevitably requires some changes to the story, but that he wanted to adapt the source material, not try to improve it.

"I have a great deal of respect for what she's done and the world she's created. I want to make the transition successfully into the filmed environment, which does require some interpretation and moving pieces around. But by no means do I want to reinvent the world or throw things aside."

"Anything you hate about it," he added, "you can lay at my doorstep."

RevolutionSF producer Shane Ivey would like to reinvent the world. But only to add more cake.
