Six Degrees of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace to The Phantom
Contest Hosted by Joe Crowe, May 22, 2002

Which phantom do you mean: The Phantom of the Opera, or the guy wearing the purple costume and the ring with the skull on it? (masenko2@hotmail.com)

Two curt responses to your question:

1. They're not the same person?
2. You could have just tried linking them both. Maybe I would have found your attempt amusing and printed them both. Or maybe not.

SW ep1 had Frank Oz in it as Yoda. Frank Oz was in Muppets Treasure Island with Tim Curry. Tim Curry was in The Shadow-- all I remember him doing was laughing and shooting a gun. (atension@earthlink.net)

A valiant attempt, but you got the wrong 1940s pulp-style movie. The Phantom, not The Shadow.

Ewan McGregor of The Phantom Menace was in The Eye of the Beholder with Maria Revelins who played the character "Miss Keenan". "Keenan" is the last name of the star of The Phantom, Frank Keenan. (piper@hollowmind.net)

Puny mortal. You can't link character names to actors. Even actors who died in 1929. But I admire your audacity.

Now b
ack to the Tree of Woe with you!

Five Degrees:
Star Wars is George Lucas' pride and joy. Amongst Lucas' babies, the Jan to Star Wars' Marsha, is American Graffiti which was produced by Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola directed the (crappy yet bloody) Bram Stoker's Dracula which starred a whiny Winona Ryder. She in turn had a small cameo as a model-groupie in Zoolander, which also had a cameo by Billy Zane. Zane plays the purple-tight-wearing title character of The Phantom. (Enigmatic01@hotmail.com)

The Phantom Menace's Natalie Portman was in The Professional. The Professional's Jean Reno was in Mission: Impossible. Mission: Impossible's Ving Rhames was in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Final Fantasy had Donald Sutherland, who was also in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Also in Buffy was Kristy Swanson, the female lead of The Phantom. (horndgod@eden.rutgers.edu)

Four Degrees:
Alright, The Phantom Menace has Frank Oz as the voice of Yoda, who also appears in The Empire Strikes Back. The Empire Strikes Back has Harrison Ford who was also in the three Indiana Jones movies. These led to "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles," where Catherine Zeta-Jones made a guest appearance. She was Sala in The Phantom. (horndgod@eden.rutgers.edu)

Three Degrees:

Let's see. Billy Zane wore the purple tights in The Phantom. He was also one creepy ass psycho in Dead Calm, wherein he terrorized Nicole Kidman, who co-starred in the quite-good-but-I-wish-teenaged-girl-fanfic-writers-would-just-GET-OVER-IT-already flick Moulin Rouge with baby Obi-Wan himself, Ewan McGregor. (afroning@chatham.edu)

A Zoolander cameo was the heroic effort of two of you. Horndgod@eden.rutgers.edu was first.

Billy Zane (The Phantom) was in full-on cameo mode in Zoolander (uncredited, but he's there). Natalie Portman also pops up as herself in that movie, and she is, of course, in The Phantom Menace. (ciaran_conliffe@hotmail.com)

From The Phantom Menace, Natalie Portman was in Zoolander with Billy Zane, the male lead of The Phantom. (horndgod@eden.rutgers.edu)

Two Degrees:

Some of you linked up with Mr. Liam Neeson through The Haunting.

Billy Zane (The Phantom), was in Zoolander with Owen Wilson. Owen Wilson was in The Haunting with Liam Neeson (Qui-Gonn). (findlayboy@yahoo.com)

Or with Mrs. Catherine Zeta Jones Michael Douglas, namely creatrix@msn.com and crow_steve@hotmail.com. However, the following entry arrived in the Mailbox of Steel first:

Catherine Zeta-Jones was in The Phantom. She was also in the absolutely terrible The Haunting, with Liam Neeson, who will never live down his scenes with Jar-Jar Binks. Or the fact that he was in The Haunting. (lyndisty@aol.com)

And then there were these, who win this week without mentioning The Haunting.

(For those of us "of a certain age") Terence Stamp is in SWI-Phantom Menace and was in The Collector (1965) with Samantha Eggar who was in The Phantom (1996) (pec@gis.net)

Try this. From Yoda in the Phantom Menace to the Empire Stikes Back which, if memory serves, starred Treat Williams as (3rd soldier on the left of snowbank or something) to the Phantom wherein Treat chewed the scenery. (pmart63@hotmail.com)
