Serenity : The River Tam Sessions
© Shane Ivey
August 26, 2005

So you've seen the trailers for Serenity — or maybe you've watched the entire run of Firefly on DVD about 1,924 times like the hopeless slave you are — and you're wondering, what's so bad about that weird girl River's background anyway? She's on the run, she has sinister dudes wearing blue gloves after her, not to mention some kind of sword-swinging assassin, but what's the deal?

The "R. Tam" session videos offer a clue.

They started appearing a few days ago on the Web. They don't have the Serenity logo or Universal's name anywhere. No credits. Just a symbol that must represent the Alliance that rules the Serenity universe, and an altogether creepifying interview with River Tam.

The unofficial word is that Joss Whedon (recognize the voice?) and Summer Glau (engrossing as ever as River Tam) put the spots together to help promote the movie. They call it viral marketing, which is an unfortunate phrase when you consider all the evil viruses out there, but still. The fan-run Web site www.session416.com has some good background and a list of mirror sites. We're happy to jump on the bandwagon.

Check it out.
