RevolutionSF Remembers Majel Barrett Roddenberry

December 31, 2008

Majel Barrett Roddenberry was Nurse Chapel in original Star Trek, then married Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. She was an incredible scene stealer in Star Trek: The Next Generation as Troi's mother Lwaxana.

Nurse Chapel and Spock. Here's the scene where Spock puts the moves on Chapel while he's all goofy with the Pon Farr.

The voice of the computer. The warm tone coming out of the computer was one more way Trek showed that the future was going to be OK. Computers sounded like hot ladies.

"Oh, Jean-Luc!! What naughty thoughts!"

Lwaxana's first appearance. The TNG crew were stuffy and reserved and boring and morose, and she fixed all that.

The dinner. This scene is good comedy of manners, with Picard trumping Lwaxana's attempt to get some "special time."

Best Picard ever. This scene is Picard going to warp 11, and Lwaxana egging him on.

It's so funny, every time I watch. Watching the bridge crew react in the background is hilarious. Stewart and Roddenberry are having a ball; you can see the gleam in their eyes.

What number appears here?

I just started my kids on TOS and they're absorbing it like hungry sponges. They'll be heartbroken when I tell them.
