Figured I'd start a new thread since the previous Heroes thread has slid WAY down on the page.
Wired has an interview with Masi Oka and Hayden Panettiere about the upcoming season. Warning: it has some SPOILERS.
Sounds like it might actually be worth watching, but I make no promises--I quit halfway through the 3rd season. I love how they try to spin the fact that they've been cut down to 19 episodes into a good thing. _________________

I didn't make it halfway through the third season. Have they explained Peter's (and others'...but mostly Peter's) varying level of idiocy yet? Until they do that, I don't think I can come back. _________________

So, I watched about the first 15 minutes of the big double premiere, and...then I deleted it. I just could not get into it. It pains me slightly to say it, but Heroes is dead to me. Permanently dead. This is not a decision; it's just how it is. _________________

An AV Club interview with Tim Kring. Interesting stuff. I like this quote especially:
| Quote: | AVC: Are there things you would have liked to do that NBC kept you from doing?
TK: Yes, I would have done fewer episodes. Thirteen a season is fabulous—you can really control the quality and the way you craft them. The sheer number of episodes has been a real struggle for us. Most shows shoot eight days, and we sometimes shoot as many as 15 days an episode. Season three took 15 months to make. Creatively, those 24 episodes are a hard number to hit. The other thing is that I would have started with new characters all over again. The premise is that this is happening to people all over the world, and the idea of seeing new people exploring this was really fascinating to me. But once fans fall in love with certain characters, it’s harder to do that. |
I think we've recommended both of those ideas here... _________________

I didn't mind the existing characters, aside from their constantly making decisions that didn't make a damn bit of sense in order to stretch the plot out. I guess that would be related to the desire to have a thirteen-episode season. _________________

I want Sylar & the Cheerleader gone. I am just absolutely sick of those characters. If I had my way the show would center around HRG. _________________ +-+-+-+

And Mr. Muggles.
Why that dog does not have his own spin-off is beyond me. _________________ RevolutionSF Podcast Queen

Th funny thing in the interview is that he confirms what we have long known: the show is written by committee, and the system of writing is so frenetic and confusing that none of the writers really has any idea what's going on. Gee, what a surprise that the characters all seem to do stuff that doesn't make any sense for them to do.
Also...it's pretty annoying that he seems to be blaming the fans, the execs, pretty much everyone but himself for Heroes going wrong. He even takes back his earlier apology!--which was the only thing that has kept me having any respect for him for a long time.
Time for Heroes to die. It was a noble idea, but it's long since gone past the event horizon of suckage. There is no saving it. _________________

I would KILL to see a Muggles spin-off. Set in space, where he fights crime. _________________ +-+-+-+

And then we can learn what he really thinks about Claire.
HRG would absolutely have to be his sidekick.
Mr. Muggles could be the one who actually saves the day, while everyone thinks its HRG doing all the good. Kind of like Penny and Brain in Inspector Gadget.
It would be awesome. _________________ RevolutionSF Podcast Queen

Having finally caught up on all the shows put on DVD, I have a few observations to make. The first is that the writers could have gotten a few awesome, fun, exciting seasons out of this show if they had simply run a superhero-themed game campaign first. Champions, GURPS Supers, hell, even those lame Marvel or DCU games would ahve at least given them the idea of how characters interact with each other!
My second idea is that society would be fine with someone flying around, just as long as they put on a costume first!!!! We're good with that sort of thing. Really, we kind of expect it! If Nathan had slapped on a cape and tights, he would have had people begging him to be president! _________________ "You're like a coat hanger with meat hanging off of it!"

I totally agree that the writers and directors should've played a superhero RPG. I'm not sure if it would've helped with keeping the characters in character--nothing's worse than a character that we've gotten to know, doing stuff that makes no sense and is totally out of character--because that kind of thing is what competent writers ought to be able to do well anyway. But it would've let them see the possibilities, and more than anything, the pitfalls. They would've realized, hey, Hiro and Peter are WAY overpowered compared to the others--I mean, look at how many points it costs to build them--and their powers cause enormous plot problems that we can only fix through stupid deus ex machina moves. Those guys need some clearly defined Power Limitations!
Man, I could go on for days how Heroes screwed up an awesome premise. And I have.
BTW, here in Japan, the 4th-season premiere is coming, and the commercials were calling it "The Fourth Season" for awhile. Then came the announcement that Heroes was ending, and the commercials suddenly changed to "Heroes: The Final Season!"
When life hands you lemons, make lemonade, I guess. _________________

In the beginning, Hiro's imprecision with his powers was a good counter to how powerful he was. The problem was the promise of Future Hiro being so able in his. If he was so interested in saving the world, Future Hiro should have been saving the cheerleader himself, instead of sending cryptic messages to the past. (That first season was so fun to watch, I didn't even notice that early mistake.)
But Peter....man. He was practically Superman by the end of season one. That would have been fine had he been restricted to dealing with problems on that level, but they tried to keep him on the ground with everyone else by making him stupid whenever it was convenient, but when it was time to be the hero he would have basic common sense again. _________________
